The site-specific installation ‘Loggia Aldobrandini ‘- that is totally eco-sustainable and reversible for the exclusive use of removable paper - is a kind of revisited ephemeral superstructure. It suggests perspective spaces inspired by the architectural views of the Renaissance and the Baroque Roman quadraturismo, but referring to modern architectural works, such as the blue building in Via Florence. The human presence is barely present in this imaginary view: the mythological figures are Bacchus and Arianna, from the homonymous painting by Tiziano.&nbsp;

Installed in Via Ettore Rolli in Rome for Festival d'Architettura di Roma 2024 (FAR) from the 28th of September to the 6th of October, "Apparato Festivo: Sorgente" by ROBOCOOP is a site-specific installation that blends history, art, and architecture, offering a reflection on scenography as an intervention tool for city design. The work connects with the Roman tradition of ephemeral architecture, a practice that has profoundly transformed the symbolic occupation of urban space.
The title, ‘Apparato Festivo: Sorgente’, is inspired by the apparati festivi designed by Bernini and Schor at Piazza di Spagna to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin of France, an event which involved recreating nature within the urban space by building a giant artificial mountain. These baroque ephemeral scenic structures are imbued with symbolic and narrative values, celebrating key moments in the city's history.

The installation on Via Ettore Rolli emerges from a reading of the urban context and the positioning of the ephemeral portal on the southern edge of the small square. This space, surrounded by buildings from different periods of the 20th century, contains both a modern fountain built around 2000 (long inactive) and the ruins of an ancient chapel dedicated to the Vergine del Riposo. ROBOCOOP’s ephemeral apparatus serves as a new focal point for the square, bringing a virtual construction to this urban fragment: an idea of a mostra, a large fountain from which water gushes forth, in dialogue with both the ruined chapel and the modern buildings nearby.
This illusory scenographic fountain celebrates the meeting between nature and the built environment, a block of rock set in the city that engages both classical and modern architectural elements. The rocky surface gradually transforms into an architectural façade, evoking human intervention that shapes raw material: an image capturing the metamorphosis of the volume. It’s a theatrical spectacle where the viewer’s gaze follows the progression of transformation. The façade’s composition references Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s sculptural and architectural works, such as Apollo and Daphne at Galleria Borghese, the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona, and the façade of Palazzo Montecitorio. The final artwork also includes anthropomorphic references from modern and contemporary architecture, such as Aldo Andreani’s Casa Sola Busca in Milan, and Luigi Moretti’s Il Girasole in Rome.

Through these works, Bernini sought to guide the viewer’s perception, directing their eyes along a process of phytomorphosis, a kinetic vision that incorporated the dimensions of space and time. Ettore Rolli thus becomes the stage for an urban scenography, with the installation taking the form of an artificial mountain, a monumental element acting as a visual and conceptual backdrop. This scenographic mountain integrates into the urban environment like a theatrical set, enhancing the idea of a visual narrative unfolding before the viewer.

The theme of metamorphosis permeates the entire work: the rock transforms into architecture, and the entire urban space undergoes a temporary transformation. The installation challenges the viewer to rethink their perception, inviting them to move around it, discovering new meanings and forms from different vantage points—a theatrical object in a theatricalized city.
‘Apparato Festivo: Sorgente’ by ROBOCOOP presents itself as an ephemeral fountain, constructed with lightweight materials such as PVC-printed fabrics that simulate the solidity of stone and the fluidity of water.

These prints, illusionistically representing rocky textures, become materials of contemporary fictitious architecture, much like how baroque stuccoes mimicked natural elements. The work creates an optical illusion that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, encouraging the public to reflect on the relationship between architecture and art. Though temporary, the installation leaves a lasting impression on the perception of the space, transforming the small square into a place of wonder, where art becomes a tool to redefine the relationship between nature and the city, between the ephemeral and the permanent.

Roma TropicalePromoted by: IED Roma

Appointed by IED Roma to curate a one-week workshop with the students on imagining of the future of Rome in 50 years, we have addressed the participants on the following questions and issues:

What are the specific characteristics of Rome's naturalistic identity? What are the images that compose it? Which of these characteristics will remain in the future evolution of the city? And therefore, what is the intrinsic, intimate, naturalness of Rome?

We have noticed that, at the current time, evident manifestations of climate changes, such as tropical temperatures, are affecting and changing the perception of the urban vegetation in Rome. Over time, the city has become populated with non-native natural species, extraneous to the typical Mediterranean landscape: small pieces of exotic nature articulate the urban space and provide, as in a montage, the image of a city, Rome, that is also tropical.

The relationship between the infesting tropical image of these species and the classical architecture of the city reactivates the romantic and decadent sense of sublime and picturesque vision of the Eternal City that Piranesi depicted through his Roman capriccios in the XVIII century.
This unseen threshold between spontaneous naturality and constrained urbanity still lies there in Rome, and&nbsp;it opens a range of possibilities for the future vision of the city.

The workshop aimed at triggering the students to imagine the physical and mental vegetal experience of Rome - where the historical urban fabric melts with the natural presence - wherever spontaneous or domesticated.

During the workshop, the students collected exotic references and natural picturesque episodes, aiming to investigate how natural traces and attitudes of the Eternal City interactwith the historical and architectural foreground, and they have reinterpreted those with a montage-led approach and image-making process.

The installation interprets a future way of experiencing, within the domestic space, the encounter of the inhabited space with nature and celebrating it in the same way the ancient Romans did within their frescoed domus.&nbsp;Reproduced on print in a 1:1 scale, this fictional “trompe l’oeil” room recalls the ancient horti picti genre, superb frescoes representing viridaria, secret gardens painted on the walls of the Roman villas in the 1st century B.C.

The students sampled multiple urban sounds and noises to create an immersive soundtrack, and made a fictional colonnade by sampling and 3d modeling the Tempio dei Propilei Egizi by Luigi Canina in Villa Borghese, a fascinating example of eclecticism used in the installation as an architectural transition element between the real space and the imaginary tropical garden depicted on the walls.
Conceived as an immersive experience where different students’ disciplines and skills convey, the final installation takes form into the Edulab at MAXXI of Rome and aims at interacting with the human presence in terms of size, scale, and atmosphere.

Palazzo Mattei, Rome2021-23

BassoRilievoPromoted by: Sovrintendenza Speciale di Roma

Conceived between 2021 to 2023, the latest installation by ROBOCOOP, BassoRilievo, exemplifies a deliberate intention to construct an illusionary infill facade within the courtyard of Palazzo Mattei di Giove, situated in the historic Ghetto neighborhood of Rome.

Commissioned and produced by the public institution Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma, the artwork serves the purpose of concealing the current construction site of the restoration of the courtyard facades originally designed by Carlo Maderno in 1598. Originally, the courtyard functioned as an open-air lapidarium, where numerous ancient Roman reliefs and sculptures adorn the walls. ROBOCOOP’s design process is rooted in this context, with the objective of fashioning a temporary facade for the courtyard.These fragments span a spectrum from the Renaissance era to the present day: in fact, BassoRilievo draws inspiration from the sculptural and plastic qualities of another of Carlo Maderno’s illustrious project, the facade of Santa Susanna church in Rome, but also from modern and contemporary architects, such as Carlo Scarpa, Luigi Moretti, and Amin Taha.

The overall composition of the facade meticulously follows the rhythmic patterns of architectural elements, as depicted by Gerolamo Mengozzi Colonna in his fresco adorning the interiors of Palazzo Labia in Venice.
The final result of BassoRilievo is a 1-to-1 scale image that symbolizes a timeless yet ephemeral monument crafted from a collage of fragments, references, and traces.

Scenografia di Frammenti
Event: Per Piranesi 1720-2020 Client: Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma / C.A.R.P. Group srlPhotography: Matteo Benedetti

Our latest commissioned installation in Rome, ‘Scenografia di Frammenti’ represents an attempt to build a Giovanni Battista Piranesi's architecture of fragments and rests.

Commissioned by the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma for the 300th birth anniversary of Piranesi to cover a construction site during the restoration of Piazza Dei Cavalieri di Malta, designed by the architect himself in 1765, this ephemeral massive structure has been conceived by multiple layers of key understanding and interpretations.

	<img width="1575" height="1260" width_o="1575" height_o="1260" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ef3811192c3547e54f0574d82ed6f62815a16b09972f3f44675606a923f88fa5/Scenografia-di-Frammenti--ROBOCOOP--2021-5.jpg" data-mid="104570826" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ef3811192c3547e54f0574d82ed6f62815a16b09972f3f44675606a923f88fa5/Scenografia-di-Frammenti--ROBOCOOP--2021-5.jpg" />

The design process starts from the Piranesi's stones and decorations on the wall of the square and moved by the anastilosis approach to rebuilding the history through the restoration from the exact found rests. In this way, the artwork aims at creating a sort of unbuilt and on-going scenographia of fragments and unveiling a lapidarium of the architectures by Piranesi.
Conceived as a construction site itself, the giant 1:1 scale artwork mixes multiple architectural textures and materials, sampling some engravings and drawings by Piranesi and using them as a pattern to make the fragmented walls. It also reveals anonymous rural landscapes of the Roman countryside through transparent materials and up-and-down paths.

From the press release:

“[...] ROBOCOOP engaged in the creation of a site-specific piece that radically changes the formal identity of Divario. The environment is invaded and divided by a temporary installation on a 1: 1 scale that prefigures a new spatial configuration through a double-height scenographic backdrop.

A fake architecture of Baroque inspiration, in Pompeian red, opens onto an imaginary landscape of Prati and the Vatican City, giving life to a completely illusory, but plausible and effective depth.
Through the reproduction of an image digitally modelled by the artists and printed on a tarp, the installation authentically evokes various architectural and pictorial references from the past such as the Sala dei Palafrenieri (1619-1621) of Palazzo Lancellotti in Rome or the sumptuous rooms of the Villa di Poppea in Oplontis (1st century BC).
The name and the theme of the exhibition itself are inspired by Quadraturis – a pictorial genre born in the second half of the 16th century, which consisted of the creation of quadratures – architectures painted on walls and ceilings within a rigorous perspective and illusionistic framework.

In 1920, in the Valori Plastici magazine (a monthly art critique publication created to spread the ideas of metaphysical painting), Giorgio De Chirico wrote: “The landscape, enclosed in the arch of a portico, as square or rectangle of the window, acquires greater metaphysical value, because it solidifies and is isolated from the space that surrounds it. Architecture completes nature”.

Thus, the exploration of the panorama continues with the works exhibited in the last room; extracts, excerpts, suggestions and coloured windows in which ROBOCOOP shifts the view and perspective to deepen the relationship between the architectural framing element and the bordering landscape, just like it happens in the installation created for the gallery space.

From “A rural Landscape” series&nbsp; &nbsp;
“A rural landscape” is a research that aims to find a relation between the built environment and rural landscape, exalting the anonymous and underrated scenaries of the contemporary landscape and taking form in paste-up and temporary installations at the moment focused around few regions of the Italy.

Souvenir from La Giudecca&nbsp;Kitsch-pop installation

In 1971, Haus-Rucker-Co, an Austrian radical architectural collective, designed Palm Tree Island, a sort of an oasis world where nature was preserved from the urban infrastructural context. This suggestion, reminding an idyllic space protected from the urban environment, kept form in a space spectacular sphere. The operation of including the urban landscape in a cliché is evidently inverse for this case: in Haus-Rucker-Co case, it was aiming to conserve nature against urban growth, while in our proposal, the whole scenery will be forced and closed in a sort of cliché box.

Nowadays we are witnessing a devaluation of the urban landscape, in particular the Italian one: it is mostly underrated, hardly depicted and mainly forced in different kind of a stereotype, as souvenirs do. Intentionally provocative, “Souvenir from La Giudecca” wants to underline the strict line between the consecration and the preservation of this architecture: from one point of view, the proposal rising up the Gino Valle’s social housing complex as a monumentum to discover and appreciate in our architectural heritage world, from the other one, it wants protecting and preserving his status inside the historic urban fabric of La Giudecca.
